Did Apple Want to Release a Faster MacBook Air?

As we all know, MacBook Air comes with a Retina display, that can be configured, but through only one way: through one processor option, a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (one of eighth-generation). The thing is that Apple may come with a faster version, as well.

It all started with a benchmark result from Geekbench from last week, that actually was leaked by Slashleaks. The benchmark was for an unreleased Mac, that has the codename AAPJ140K1,1, and which is powered by a dual-core Core i7 processor (eighth-generation) with a base speed of 1.8GHz. This model is not actually listed, but it has the same number as the brand new MacBook Air.

To give you more pieces of evidence, the benchmark talks about 16 GB worth of  2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM, that’s an upgrade option for MacBook Air. The Core i7-8510Y seems to be part of Intel’s Amber Lake lineup, just as the Core i5 from the brand new MacBook Air – even though is not listed on Intel’s ARK database.

Also, the MacBook Air, that has a Core i7 chip, also has a multi-core score of 8,553 on Geekbench – and that means that’s about 8.5% faster than the average score of the existing alternatives that have a Core i5.

Does the device exist in Apple’s portfolio?

John Poole, who’s the founder of Geekbench, said that the benchmark results are true, and not fake, as many people believe, but that doesn’t mean that it’s out of the question. If it’s actually real, it shows that the 2018 MacBook Air, that has a Core i7 already exists in the company’s portfolio, but that it was not released publicly.

We are allowed to assume that Apple has many different versions of its products, and it’s understandable why not all of them have hit the market.
