Android One Devices Will Get 2 Years Of Android Updates Confirms Google

While Android is one of the most reliable OS for smartphones, the way the updates reach devices is quite problematic. Updates take time to roll out, as phone manufacturers need to handle them first. The Android One smartphone series is a bit different from the rest, as it runs the unmodified Android, which means that timely updates were the norm.

At first, this program was designed for low-end phones, helping them deliver better performance and allowing them to receive Android updates in time. However, things changed in time. It appeared that Google almost forgot about it as it started to follow more on Android Go. This is a slimmed down version of Android and is considered that works even better than the standard one, making it better for budget devices.

Timely updates

The program still appeared to focus on delivering updates on time. The Android website even added a page for it where it was also stated that the devices will get 2 years of guaranteed Android updates. This was unexpected good news because until that point this kind of guarantee was only made for expensive devices.

Many users were glad to hear about this decision. However, rumors started flying around a couple of days ago. A Reddit user observed that the webpage does not mention the 2 years of guaranteed updates. This worried many users, as they were afraid that Google decided to give up on that.

Right now there was no official announcement. Nonetheless, it was reported that Google offered an answer to India Today. According to the reports, here is what Google had to say about the rumours:

“We confirm that our promise to provide 2 years of updates on Android One devices still stands and our website design does not impact the promise of this program.”
