The iPhone 11 3D Camera Sensors Might Be Supplied By Sony

A Bloomberg report revealed some interesting things about the upcoming generation of iPhones. It appears that Apple is going to use 3D cameras.

However, the cameras won’t be produced by Apple itself. The report indicates that Sony will deliver 3D sensors for Apple. This is not the only mobile phone manufacturer that orders for Sony. Many other companies are ordering for them, and Apple is just the latest name on the list.

The report claims that the chips will power both the rear cameras and the front ones, for multiple smartphones in 2015. The demand is so high that Sony has to increase its production in order to keep up, and this has been confirmed by Satoshi Yoshihara, Sony’s sensor division head.

An increase of 3D cameras phones

If we think about the high demand of 3D cameras, this means that we should see numerous smartphones featuring 3D cameras in the upcoming year. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but there is a big chance that we will see iPhones with Sony’s 3D sensors soon.

The technology used by Sony is called “Time of Flight”. It sends invisible laser beams and they measure how much time they need in order to return. These cameras could bring major improvements to games and apps, especially when it comes to augmented reality.

This has already been proved by Sony. The company demonstrated how this technology works. For example, in one app the camera managed to calculate the depth of the room and then added a goldfish that was able to swim around the real objects.

“Cameras revolutionized phones, and based on what I’ve seen, I have the same expectation for 3D,” said Yoshihara. “The pace will vary by field, but we’re definitely going to see adoption of 3D. I’m certain of it.”
