German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Monday that she will not seek re-election as president of her party.
According to several sources, Merkel announced her decision this morning to the leaders of her party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
This decision follows a new electoral setback on Sunday during the regional elections in Hesse.
Merkel’s coalition led the way, with 27 percent of the vote, but a ten-point drop from the 2013 poll.
Merkel has been president of the CDU since 2000. By renouncing this role, she would launch a race within the conservative party for her succession to the head of government.
