Activision was Bungie’s publisher for quite some time but it appears that their collaboration has finally come to an end. After 9 years of partnership, the two have parted ways. The news has been confirmed by both the studio and the publisher. A common statement was released for GamesBeat. You can read it below:
Today, we’re announcing plans for Bungie to assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise. Going forward, Bungie will own and develop the franchise, and Activision will increase its focus on owned IP and other projects. Activision and Bungie are committed to a seamless transition for the Destiny franchise and will continue to work closely together during the transition on behalf of the community of Destiny players around the world.
What happens to the Destiny movies?
The Destiny games were a success right from the start. The first game in the series appeared back in 2014 and in only one day $500 million worth of product was shipped. While there have been minor issues, it appeared that fans were pleased overall. Destiny 2 was launched in 2017 and in 2018 it also received its beloved Forsaken expansion.
Nonetheless, we believe that this change won’t affect Destiny 2. In fact, Bungie might have a chance to experiment more now that its publisher can’t impose certain things. It remains to see whether the game will need to move to another platform or not.
Bungie explained in a blog post that there were numerous differences between their vision and the Activision’s ideas. For example, Activision wanted to make Destiny 2 more accessible in order to generate more revenue, while the studio wanted to keep this game for hardcore players.
“We had a vision for Destiny that we believed in, but to launch a game of that magnitude, we needed the support of an established publishing partner,” explained Bungie.
