We are all waiting for a GTA 6 announcement, and sometimes it seems as if Rockstar forgot about it. Last year we received Red Dead Redemption, and it was a huge success. However, there was not a word about GTA 6. However, there might be a reason for that.
Vice President Jeronimo Barrera quit
Jeronimo Barrera worked at Rockstar games for almost 20 years, and he was vital for the company. Now, after almost two decades at the studio, he decided that it is time to quit. The decision was taken because there was something that he disliked, but simply because he decided that it was his time to go:
“I pretty much left when it was done, it was a natural progression,” he explained. “I looked at what I would be doing for the next few years if I stayed on and where I was in life with my family, my kids, my desire to make cool s**t. I felt like it was hitting all of the right points.”
Barrera also mentioned GTA games, and he did confess that he is impressed by the technology used for video games nowadays, while at Rockstar he felt that he wasn’t able to explore all that: “If I had stayed at Rockstar it would have been more GTAs, more RDRs and less of this other stuff going on out there right now.”
More than that, he also mentioned Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online, and he feels that they had a major impact on the video game industry. “‘GTA Online’ was incredibly impactful,” he said. “I know it had a bit of a weird start, but it galvanized what online gaming for consoles can be.”
Barrera had an important role, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 was slowed down by his departure. However, Rockstar is already recruiting new team members, which means that it shouldn’t take that long to develop the game.
