Battle royale games are the latest trend in the video game industry. If we look at hits such as Fortnite and PUBG, it becomes obvious that gamers enjoy these games.
More and more developers are giving battle royale games a try, and it appears that the Dark Souls dev might join the list in the future.
Open to the possibility
The creator of Dark Souls, Hidetaka Miyazaki offered an interview in which he talked about battle royale. He admitted that he would love to give them a try.
There’s always the possibility…these games are definitely fun. And we’re interested in the patterns they are taking. If we did it, it might be a bit different! But we’re definitely interested and there’s definitely that possibility in the future. We’d love to take a crack at them some day.
At the same time, he also explained that it is very important to have many diverse games in the industry. Developers need to create all types of games, instead of focusing just on the latest trends.
We do need this diversity in the industry. Regardless of what From Software is doing, we need people making battle royale games and live services and we need people making singleplayer-focused experiences. We feel that this diversity is what will keep everyone going.
The importance of single player games
If you prefer single player games over battle royale ones, there is no need to worry. Miyazaki explained that single-player games are not going anywhere. In fact, two of the most popular games of 2019 were single player ones.
Single-player action games don’t feel too rare in the current climate. While Devil May Cry 5 has some online elements, it’s coming out two weeks before our game. And that’s a very single-player focussed experience. We’ve also had God of War and Spider-Man.
