Nintendo Switch has been a hit among gamers, with more than thirty million units sold in two years after the initial release date. The popularity of the device made Nintendo a market leader in video games sales for the first time in over a decade.
Some were surprised that the company managed to propel itself back on the market after the failure of the Wii U. Many argue that the key to success was the decision to convert the console into a hybrid device as owners have the option to dock the portable device and gain access to an improved performance while also using a TV or monitor as a display.
However, nothing is perfect, and Nintendo faced a few controversies. One of them surfaced before the console was released, as the company announced that it would offer a subscription for online services, in the vein of Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Receive More Free NES Games This Month
The service was released in September 2018, and it is mandatory to play most online multiplayer games or modes. Besides online gaming, it also offers access to the popular Tetris 99, the option to send save data into the cloud and a dedicated voice chat service which works with the help of a mobile device.
The cost of the service is quite small at $20 for a full year, with several other plans being available. The fact that you need to pay money for it angered lots of prospective customers who complained that Nintendo had become another greedy company which seeks to earn as much money as possible from gamers.
To sweeten the deal Nintendo offered two classic NES games for free at launch, and new NES games are added each month. The titles for August are Kung-Fu Heroes and Vice: Project Doom, the former being a beat them up and the latter an action title. Subscribers from Japan will receive a different game instead of Vice: Project Doom.
