Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL Codenames Revealed

The latest Google Pixel devices were released less than a year ago, but many fans are already looking forward to the next models. The upcoming devices, Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, have been mentioned in the past, with the Pixel 4 appearing twice in the Android Open Source Project. A reliable source has managed to discover and release the codenames for two Pixel devices and unannounced Google devices.

The information comes from a commit which was uploaded on the Android Open Source Project in an attempt to fix some issues which affected the SELinux policy. In a nutshell, the SELinux policy is a security model used by the Linux kernel, and it is often personalized for individual devices.

The developer tried to explain what they were trying to do by sharing a list of internal files in the comments. On that list, we can see an error and the name of several devices, including two made by Panasonic and six made by Google. Four of them are already known as the names for the Pixel XL( Marlin), Pixel 2 and 2XL (Wahoo) Pixel 3 XL (Crosshatch) and Pixel 3a XL (Bonito).

The remaining devices are codenamed Coral and Needlefish. Further research made by a different source attempted to find out if these names are present in the beta version of the Google app. Surprisingly, the app code reveals that Coral is the codename of the Pixel 4 while Flame is another name for the Google Pixel 4 XL.

This information reinforces a previous leak of a benchmark for Google Coral. The device used in the benchmark sported some impressive specs including a Snapdragon 855 SoC and 6GB of RAM. Needlefish remains elusive at this point, and it is likely that Google may be working on an experimental Android device.

It is likely that the upcoming Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL devices will arrive with Android Q, which is also in development. The smartphones should be released on the market in October.
