Today, we’ll be showing you how to fix Borderlands 2 startup error.
Borderlands 2 is a popular video game, which is widely deployed on Windows PC. However, a number of players have complained of a startup error, which typically crashes the game upon launch (via Steam or via the game’s original exe).
To fix this startup error, we have come up with a handful credible solutions. Read on!
How to Fix Borderlands 2 Startup Error
This startup error is mainly caused by a corruption in Steam, incomplete game file/cache or system glitch. However, there is practically no way of diagnosing the actual cause of the error; so, you may have to try a number of fixes and see which one works for you.
Below are some of these fixes:
Method 1: Reset Steam
To reset Steam:
- locate the Steam option at the top left-hand corner if your Steam window and right-click it;
- select Exit to close the program; and
- double-click the Steam client icon to relaunch it.
Now, try launching Borderlands 2 again. If the problem persists, try the next fix.
Method 2: Verify integrity of game files
To do this:
- launch Steam on your PC;
- go to Library (tab);
- find Borderlands 2 and right-click it;
- select Properties > Local Files (tab) and then Verify Integrity of Game Files.
This action will prompt Steam to identify and replace any missing game file

Method 3: Disable Cloud Sync
Steam hosts a cloud sync feature, which automatically syncs (back up) your games’ data to the cloud. Surprisingly, some gamers have claimed that they were able to fix the startup error simply by disabling the cloud sync feature.
To disable cloud sync for Borderlands 2:
- go to Library under Steam;
- find Borderlands 2 and right-click it;
- click the Updates tab;
- find the Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for Borderlands 2 checkbox; and
- uncheck it.
If the problem persists, you can try reinstalling the game.
Closing Note
In the event that none of the fixes above works, you can try and reconfigure the game’s settings like “auto-detection” (disable) under launcher’s configuration. Also, you can try and restore the “profile.bin” file in your game’s data, under: Documents > My Games > Borderlands 2.
