Android 9 Pie Update Available For Asus Zenfone 5, 5Z, and 5Q (Lite)

The Android 9 Pie update is slowly reaching more and more smartphones. The update was released four months ago and it managed to roll out on some devices. Right now it appears that it is time for Asus smartphones to receive the new Android version.

The Zenfone 5, Zenfone 5Z & Zenfone 5 Lite were launched in March 2018. The first one that got the update was the Zenfone 5. Users immediately noticed the improvements brought the update. For example, the speaker upgraded its sound quality. The same update is supposed to reach the Zenfone 5 and the Zenfone 5Z soon.

Timeline

Back on 19 December, the Android update for Zenfone 5 ZE620KL was leaked and users were able to download it from the official website. It was a FOTA update and it had around 1.1 GB.

On 28 December it became possible to install the  90.10.138.157 update for the Asus Zenfone 5Z. The software update was based on Android Pie. The users living in Taiwan were the first ones to receive the update, ahead of the set date. The update weighted in at 1048 MB. Users were able to download the OTA zip package manually and then flash it on their ZenFone 5Z.

This update brought the Android 9.0 Pie upgrade. In addition to that, the new version also came with the update security path for November. There were also several improvements, such as the camera experience which was sped up.

On 22 January 2019 the Asus Zenfone 5 ZE620KL Global variant received the 16.0610.1901.74 update. The new version solved various issues. For example, it brought fixes for the Line messengers errors which occurred when users tried to send pictures over Wi-Fi network. The ZIP file can be downloaded from the Asus website.

Install the update

In order to install the Pie update on your Zenfone 5, you need to download the FOTA update first. Once you do that you need to transfer the update on the microSD of your device. Enter recovery mode and select the “apply update from microSD” option. Then choose the FOTA and press OK.
