What we know so far

Epic Games released an article all about Fortnite on Next Gen consoles on its website, answering the following questions:

Is this an all-new Fortnite?

No, this is not a new version of Fortnite. It’s Fortnite optimised to take advantage of the new hardware and features on next-gen consoles.

How will Fortnite take advantage on Next-Gen Hardware?

More powerful hardware allows Epic to improve performance and visuals.

At launch, the version of Fortnite released on next-gen consoles will be built with Unreal Engine 4.

It will then be migrated to Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021.

We know the PS5 will have the ability to put out 4k at 120 FPS, but it’s unclear whether this will be available for Fortnite at launch.

Unreal Engine 5

The Unreal Engine 5 was revealed in an impressive tech demo. It has a number of features that make it one of the most exciting announcements in the gaming industry.

There are two standout features of the new engine, called Lumen and Nanite.

We’ll likely get some more information regarding the new Unreal Engine at the PS5 Reveal Event later this week.

Nanite

Put simply, Nanite allows developers to import extremely high-detailed source material, but as ‘virtualised geometry’. In short – developers can add insanely detailed items into the game easily.

It’s exciting to imagine the potential for this with Fortnite!

Lumen

Lumen concerns itself with lighting and is an incredibly impressive feature of Unreal Engine 5.

This feature allows for lighting to be fully dynamic, in other words, change depending on the environment.

It calculates shadows and reflections on the fly, creating real-time and very realistic behaviour. You’ll even see that shining a light in the tech demo makes some insects scurry away! Amazing stuff.

When Fortnite does port over to the PS5, and with UE5, we can suspect a large increase in frame rate for users.

Gameplay?

As of now, there is little gameplay of any title confirmed for the PS5; we do however suspect Fortnite will release some in the coming months.

All we saw from Epic Games was a demo for an untitled game, which is perhaps not relatable to Fortnite!

PS5 Console Reveal

The PS5 reveal event lifted the lid on what to expect from the Next Gen console.

With increased resolution and framerates, you may get a slight advantage in competitive games like Fortnite.

The new DualShock 5 controller will likely have some features that give players an advantage – with haptic feedback the main selling point.

Xbox Series X Comparison

Fortnite is a quality game in its own right and doesn’t rely on super high-tech graphic to make it stand out.

Even if there is a slight difference in the capability between PS5 and Xbox Series X, does expect the game to run any differently.

This also opens the door for cross-play – so the choice of console is solely down to you!
